I have pretty severe dental anxiety. The last time I went to the dentist, it was absolutely horrendous. I told the dentist I could feel it but he thought just pushing through would be better. I haven’t been able to go back since but I’m afraid I’m developing a cavity. I know I need to go back. Usually, marijuana calms down my anxiety. Do you think a dentist would be willing to prescribe some for me if it is for anxiety?
Petra
Dear Petra,
I’m sorry for what you experienced. It was unprofessional and unkind for your dentist to put you through that. What you need is a dentist who understands dental anxiety. These dentists always exhibit certain traits which are more conducive to a positive experience for you.
Compassion
They understand that most patients who have dental anxiety have it because of a traumatizing experience they’ve had. Because of that they are will always show compassion. It will also be a judgment-free zone. They know the courage it takes for you to come into the office and have work done.
Patient
In addition to displaying compassion, they are also patient. They would never push forward with work unless their patient was completely numb. They are also willing to wait if you need a moment because of stress.
Cooperative
Some patients need the dentist to tell them everything they’re about to do. Others don’t want to know anything and just want to get it over with. A dentist who caters to anxious patients understands that and does what makes the patient the most comfortable.
Pain & Anxiety Relief
As for using marijuana, that varies state by state. I don’t know what state you are in so it would be hard for me to advise you on that. However, I do have a better suggestion.
If you see a sedation dentist, they can give you a medication which will completely relax you. Not only will you be anxiety-free, you’ll be pain-free as well. If you use oral conscious sedation it is administered by a simple pill.
It is very strong, though. You will need a someone to drive you to and from your appointment as well as stay with you until you are lucid again. If you don’t want anything that strong, then you may want to try nitrous oxide. This isn’t quite as strong but will relax you. Then, when you’re done, you’ll be able to get on with your day as normal.
Don’t put off getting your tooth looked at. It is much easier to get a filling than it is to deal with a tooth infection.
