Why Do We Need Teeth Whitening?
When our teeth first erupt during childhood, they have their own distinct color and shape. The pigmentation that gives them color resides under the outer enamel layer in the second layer called the dentin. As we go through life, different substances like highly pigmented foods, coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco stain our teeth. If these stains remained on the surface of the enamel, regular hygiene or professional cleanings would remove them completely. But some of the pigment soaks through the enamel, adding color to the dentin.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
In order to bleach stains from the dentin layer, a strong peroxide solution must remain in contact with your teeth for a significant amount of time or be accelerated with a special light. Once it reaches the dentin layer, the peroxide releases oxygen, which bleaches the stains, removing them permanently. Because the pigmentation is oxidized at the dentin layer, teeth whitening will not only remove accumulated stains but will even lighten the natural pigment of the teeth.
If you have ever tried over-the-counter teeth whitening methods, you may assume that teeth whitening simply doesn’t work very well. The truth is that these products, which are designed to be used without the supervision of a dental professional, are not very effective. So-called whitening toothpastes do not remain on the teeth long enough to have any effect, and the peroxide solutions offered with teeth-whitening strips are much weaker than professional solutions.
Three Methods to Choose From
Dr. Dennis offers three different methods because they have different advantages. For any of these methods, we will begin by making sure your teeth are clean and that there are no cracked teeth, open cavities, or loose fillings that could lead to tooth sensitivity.
The take-home method is the least expensive and allows you to whiten your teeth to your desired whiteness over time in the privacy of your own home. If you choose this method, Dr. Dennis will take an impression of your teeth and create a set of trays for you to use with the whitening peroxide gel she will provide along with detailed instructions. Although teeth whitening produces permanent results, you’ll continue to accumulate new stains, so you may want to touch up your smile every year or two. You can just keep the trays and pick up new whitening gel for this purpose.
