In the past when you needed a crown to save a damaged or broken tooth, it was necessary to come in for the diagnosis and tooth preparation and then wear an often-uncomfortable temporary crown for possibly weeks. Then a second appointment was needed to place and adjust the crown. Same-day crowns, made in our office with CEREC® technology, do away with all that. Dr. Susan Dennis can diagnose, prepare, and place your new crown in just one visit.
Metal-Free Technology
Traditional crowns were made with porcelain that was usually fused to a metal base to provide needed strength. This meant that the restoration often looked lifeless and flat because it had to be opaque to cover the color of the metal. And it would eventually develop a dark line at the gumline where the metal would show through as the gums receded over time. These crowns were made by creating and and firing layers of porcelain. Same-day crowns, on the other hand, are created by a computer-driven milling machine.
Digital scanning technology eliminates the need for messy impression material in your mouth. With the precise specifications and color match indicated by the scan, the computer fabricates your crown, so it can be placed in the same appointment. And your new restoration will be made out of a tough, high-tech ceramic—completely metal-free.
The Same-Day Crown Procedure
The manufacture process only takes about 20 minutes, during which time you can relax and listen to music, read a magazine, or watch cable TV. Then Dr. Dennis will use advanced bonding techniques and materials to permanently place your new crown. She’ll also polish your restoration to provide the gloss and sparkle of natural teeth. You can find out more about same-day crowns by reading our CEREC crowns page.
