I’ve been having horrible eczema and finally went to have a Clifford’s test done to see if it was allergy related. It turns out I am either sensitive or full-blown allergic to the following materials: dental cement, formaldehyde, cobalt, chromium, titanium, nickel, and mercury. Is there a way to find a dentist who knows how to work with these specific allergies and sensitivities? I’m also thinking I’ll need to replace any silver fillings I have as well.
Thank you,
Carla
Dear Carla,
While there aren’t dentists who work with specific allergies, there are dentists who can help you. I will say upfront that many dentists won’t work around Clifford’s tests and find them controversial. That’s okay because there are dentists who will. In your place, I’d look for a dentist who lists themselves as a holistic dentist or biological dentist.
These aren’t specialties, so I’d do an internet search. If they use the term on their websites, it means they are willing to work with patients in your situation.
Removing Silver Amalgam Fillings
The high mercury content in silver amalgam fillings always requires dentists to take precautions for their patients whenever they’re removing them, it will be even more important in your particular allergy situation.
There is a sanitary amalgam removal process where the dentist will use an isolator dam, a fan, and cold water to keep the mercury from melting. You’ll also want to make sure they drape you so none of the dust gets on your person, causing your allergies to flare up.
They can then replace your fillings with composite white fillings, which are mercury-free. Best of luck to you.
