I’ve had about seven dental crowns for quite a few years. I think twelve. One has always had a slight blemish that wasn’t really a problem, but now I can feel it. It feels and looks like a horizontal crack. I’m not opposed to replacing the crown. It has served me well. What I’m wondering is if this is considered a dental emergency? Also, should I replace all of them or just the one and wait for the others to grow old naturally?

Dear Amber,
Let’s start with the one with the crack. While not a dental emergency where you’d need to drop everything and get it replaced, I would go ahead and schedule an appointment. Soemtime in the fairly near future that will have problems and break.
As to the other crowns, it is more a matter of cost and convenience. If you have the money to replace all of them at once, it will certainly save you from having to go back to the dentist each time one of the seven decides to go to the dental crown afterlife. However, if nothing is wrong with them it is not necessary to replace them right now.
You know your budget and time pressures better than anyone. I recommend when you go in to get this crown replaced, have the dentist look at the remainder of them and give his or her assessment on their health and potential longevity. Then, the two of you can make a decision together as to what works with your budget and schedule best.
If you do decide to do them all at once, you might find that sedation dentistry will allow you to get the work done in complete comfort.
I’m glad you are on top of things and noticed the change. It shows that you are diligent with your oral health care!
